Adult dogs require their nutrition to meet their energy needs and support good health. The quantity you feed your dog should be based on their size and energy output related to his activity level, rather than how full their bowl is. Overfeeding can lead to obesity and numerous health issues, so shower your best mate with love and affection rather than extra food and treats!

If your dog’s nickname is “Cyclone Pup”, he’s probably more active than other dogs and would require more energy from his diet than normal maintenance levels. Working dogs like sheep and cattle herders or police dogs, need more daily energy intake compared to their couch potato counterparts who will require less daily energy intake. Additionally, dogs recovering from surgeries or illnesses or with a specialised health concern may have additional nutritional needs. Seasonality can also affect your dog’s food intake; extreme temperatures (both hot and cold) will place more energy demands on your dog as they acclimate.

It is best to base your dog’s intake on a combination of the feeding guide from your dog’s food and their body condition. This will allow you to adjust their intake based on their whether they are above or below “peak” condition and will reduce the risk of them becoming overweight. You can access our body condition chart here.

When buying a quality dog food, always compare ingredients and feeding rates. Some recipes require more calories to achieve the same nutritional benefits as higher quality pet foods that can give you more nutritional value with smaller quantities.
